Linking the Subsurface Indian Ocean Dipole to Central Pacific ENSO

نویسندگان

چکیده

We identified a remote linkage from the Central Pacific (CP) El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to subsurface Indian Ocean dipole (Sub-IOD) occurring in winter-to-spring. Although most Sub-IOD events co-occur with surface (IOD) autumn, some develop independently These spring Sub-IODs are usually accompanied by CP ENSO event that develops winter, peaks early spring, and has more westward-located sea temperature anomaly over central equatorial (around 180°E). The accompanying zonal wind anomalie during these western Niño (La Niña) contributes an anomalous descending (ascending) branch of Walker circulation Indo-Pacific region easterly (westerly) anomalies winter following spring. This helps trigger positive (negative) event.

Interaction Between the Indian Ocean Dipole and ENSO Associated with Ocean Subsurface Variability

The Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) is an intrinsic coupled mode of variability in the tropical Indian Ocean. It has broad impacts on regional climate. An IOD index is defined as the difference between sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies averaged over the western Indian Ocean (WIO, 50°–70°E, 10°S– 10°N) and eastern Indian Ocean (EIO, 90°– 110°E, 10°S–Eq.). An important issue in the studies of IOD...

Revisiting ENSO/Indian Ocean Dipole phase relationships

Here we show that the characteristics of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), such as its power spectrum and phase relationship with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), can be succinctly explained by ENSO combination mode (C-mode) wind and heat flux forcing together with a seasonal modulation of the air/sea coupled Indian Ocean (IO) Bjerknes feedback. This model explains the observed high-freque...

Surface and subsurface dipole variability in the Indian Ocean and its relation with ENSO

An ocean general circulation model, forced with observed winds for the period 1958–97, was used to examine surface and subsurface temperature variability in the Indian Ocean and its relation to ENSO. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of temperature anomalies in the equatorial longitude-depth plane indicates that the leading mode of variability has a dipole character, with strongest l...

Multidecadal Indian Ocean Variability Linked to the Pacific and Implications for Preconditioning Indian Ocean Dipole Events

The Indian Ocean has sustained robust surface warming in recent decades, but the role of multidecadal variability remains unclear. Using ocean model hindcasts, characteristics of low-frequency Indian Ocean temperature variations are explored. Simulated upper-ocean temperature changes across the IndianOcean in the hindcast are consistent with those recorded in observational products and ocean re...

Relationship Among Sea Surface Temperature, ENSO and Indian Ocean Dipole in the Indian Ocean: A Clue to Recognizing Convective Systems

The Northern Indian Ocean is unique in the global ocean because of seasonal reversal of winds as well as surface ocean currents. In the southern part of the Indian Ocean, a significant ocean-atmospheric phenomenon developed just like an El Nino phenomenon noticed in the Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon is known as the Indian Ocean Dipole. In this study we investigate the relationship between IOD ...
